Costco reported earnings that came in ahead of what analysts had expected, but a closer look at the numbers shows a meaningful chunk of the beat came from something that will not repeat. Roughly $0.15 per share of the profit came from a one-time tariff refund, according to the company's disclosure. That is not a small amount when you consider how thin retail margins tend to be.
Strip that refund out and the quarter still looks solid, just less spectacular. The warehouse club continued to draw in members, and renewal rates held steady, which is the metric that matters most for a business built on subscription fees. Traffic stayed positive, and shoppers kept coming back for bulk groceries and household staples even as broader consumer spending showed signs of caution.
The question now is whether the underlying momentum can carry into the next quarter without that tariff boost. Costco has generally been viewed as a defensive stock, one that holds up when budgets get tight because its model rewards bulk buying. That reputation was on display again here, even if the headline number got a little help from a refund that will not show up again.
