Dollar Tree shares slid on Thursday following the release of its second-quarter earnings report. The discount retailer posted adjusted earnings of $2.70 per share, but that number included a hefty $1.31 boost from tariff refunds. Strip that out, and the company earned just $1.39 per share on an underlying basis.
That softer figure worried investors, but the bigger concern came from management's warning about rising fuel prices. Executives called the higher costs at the pump a "very, very meaningful" headwind for the business. The company said it is feeling the squeeze across its supply chain, from trucking goods to stores to customers driving less frequently to save on gas.
Dollar Tree operates thousands of locations under its namesake banner and the Family Dollar chain. The company has been working to revamp its assortment and attract more middle-income shoppers, but inflation and fuel costs are complicating those efforts. Management noted that while demand for value remains strong, the cost of getting products to shelves is eating into margins.
The stock's decline reflects investor worry that these pressures could linger into the second half of the year. Fuel prices have been volatile, and Dollar Tree said it is not counting on any quick relief. The company is exploring ways to offset the hit, including better route planning and freight efficiency, but acknowledged that the current environment is tough.
For now, the retailer is sticking with its full-year outlook, though it cautioned that the fuel situation bears close watching. Shoppers may also see some price adjustments, though Dollar Tree reiterated its commitment to keeping most items at low price points. The market will be looking for more clarity when the company reports again in the fall.
