The Federal Reserve Board, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, and the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency have jointly adopted a new, coordinated framework for handling highly sensitive information during bank examinations. The move replaces the previous patchwork of agency-specific procedures with a single, consistent standard across all three regulators.
Under the new approach, examiners will follow uniform protocols for accessing, storing, and transmitting confidential supervisory data, including details on cybersecurity defenses, internal risk models, and proprietary trade secrets. The goal is to reduce the risk of leaks or unauthorized access while still giving examiners the full picture they need to assess a bank's health.
A key part of the plan involves stricter controls on who can view certain files, with mandatory encryption and limits on copying or printing. The agencies also agreed on a shared process for notifying banks if their sensitive information is ever compromised during an exam.
Industry observers say the change should cut compliance costs for banks, which previously had to juggle different rules depending on which agency was conducting the review. The new framework takes effect next quarter, and the agencies have promised to issue plain-language guidance for banks on how to prepare. The coordinated approach is expected to make examinations smoother while keeping the most confidential data under tighter wraps.
