Goodyear (GT)’s Turnaround is Still Burning Through Cash, Not Just Rubber

The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company has quietly pushed back the finish line for its "Goodyear Forward" restructuring program after missing several key financial goals. According to a recent report, CEO Mark Stewart acknowledged that the company is still working toward a 10% operating margin and sustainable cash generation, but the road there is proving longer and rougher than initially expected.

At the end of the last quarter, Goodyear's debt still sat above the $7 billion mark, a stubborn reminder that the turnaround is not just about selling more tires. The company has been selling off non-core assets, closing plants, and trimming its workforce, yet the cash drain persists. Stewart framed the extended timeline as a realistic adjustment rather than a failure, saying the focus is on building a leaner operation that can finally deliver consistent profits.

Investors, however, are growing impatient. The stock has struggled as the market waits for tangible proof that the rubber is actually hitting the road in a positive way. The tire maker faces headwinds from raw material costs, soft demand in key markets, and the heavy interest burden that comes with its debt load. While Goodyear insists the strategy is intact, the revised schedule suggests that burning through cash is still part of the current ride, not just a thing of the past.
