A Jacksonville city council committee has approved the release of $30 million in local gas tax funds to rescue the Jacksonville Transportation Authority from a deepening financial crisis. The decision moves the agency closer to securing the money it says it needs to keep buses running and avoid steep service cuts.
The transportation authority has faced mounting pressure in recent months as rising operating costs and flat revenue have drained its reserves. Officials warned that without an infusion of cash, the agency could be forced to reduce routes, delay maintenance, and scale back planned improvements across the city.
The gas tax money had been set aside for transportation projects, but the authority argued that the immediate shortfall required a shift in priorities. Committee members questioned how the agency reached this point and pressed for details on long term fixes rather than one time relief.
Supporters of the release said reliable public transit is essential for thousands of residents who depend on buses to reach work, school, and medical appointments. They argued that letting the system deteriorate would hurt the broader local economy.
The measure now heads to the full council for a final vote. If approved, the funds would provide temporary breathing room while officials work on a broader plan to stabilize the authority's finances in the years ahead.
