Model ML has confirmed a new investment from HSBC Asset Management, made through the firm's main venture arm. The funding is meant to help Model ML scale its agentic operating system, a platform built specifically for financial services companies.
The move points to a broader trend: banks and asset managers are looking for AI tools that understand their industry, not just general purpose chatbots. Model ML says its system handles workflows that require multiple steps, like compliance checks, client onboarding, and trade reconciliation, without needing constant human oversight.
The company argues that most AI products on the market today are too generic for finance. They need to plug into legacy systems, respect strict data rules, and explain their decisions to auditors. Model ML's platform tries to solve that by combining task automation with a layer of governance and reporting that financial firms can actually use.
HSBC Asset Management's decision to invest suggests they see value in this approach. The exact amount was not disclosed, but the deal is expected to help Model ML expand its engineering team and open new offices in Asia and North America.
Model ML's CEO said the funding will allow the company to move faster on product development and sign up more enterprise clients. He also noted that demand from mid-sized financial institutions has been stronger than expected, which pushed the team to prioritize scalability.
This is not the first time HSBC has backed fintech startups, but it is a notable bet on the agentic AI space, which has seen a surge of interest over the past year. Industry watchers expect more deals like this as financial firms try to cut costs and improve efficiency without taking on too much risk.
