A new report on the financial condition of U.S. states has given Illinois a failing grade, placing it among the worst performers in the nation. The 2026 Financial State of the States report, released by Truth in Accounting, examined the fiscal health of all fifty states and found that Illinois is one of only four states to receive an F rating.
The analysis focuses on each state's ability to cover its long-term obligations, including pension liabilities and retiree healthcare costs. Illinois has struggled with these burdens for years, and the latest findings show the problem has not improved. The state's unfunded liabilities remain among the highest in the country, leaving taxpayers on the hook for billions of dollars in future payments.
According to the report, Illinois would need to significantly increase revenue or cut spending to close the gap. Truth in Accounting noted that there is a legislative path forward, suggesting that lawmakers could adopt reforms to address the structural issues driving the shortfall.
The failing grade adds pressure on state officials to act. Without changes, the report warns, Illinois will continue to face serious fiscal challenges that could affect public services and the state's overall economic stability.
