Samsung and Google took the wraps off their new AI-powered smart glasses on Tuesday, signaling a major push into wearable technology that directly challenges Meta's current market lead. The devices, which integrate Google's Gemini AI assistant directly into the frame, aim to offer hands-free access to information, navigation, and communication without requiring a phone in hand.
The partnership combines Samsung's hardware expertise with Google's software and AI capabilities. Early demonstrations showed the glasses providing real-time translations, identifying landmarks, and offering contextual reminders based on what the wearer sees. Unlike earlier smart glasses that struggled with bulk and limited functionality, these are designed to look like standard eyewear while packing sensors, a small display, and a camera.
This move puts pressure on Meta, which has invested heavily in its Ray-Ban Stories and Quest headsets. Meta's current smart glasses offer camera and audio features but lack the deep AI integration that Samsung and Google are promising. Meanwhile, Apple is reportedly working on its own smart glasses, though the company has not confirmed a release date. Industry analysts expect Apple to enter the market within the next two years, potentially with a device that syncs tightly with the iPhone and Apple's ecosystem.
The announcement comes as the broader tech industry races to find the next major computing platform beyond smartphones. Smart glasses represent a gamble on augmented reality and always-on AI assistance. Samsung and Google have not yet announced pricing or a release date, but they confirmed that developer kits will be available later this year.
