Singapore-headquartered StoneBench's new research Fragmentation Finance maps how geopolitics is reshaping Asian finance

A new research initiative from Singapore-based advisory firm StoneBench is tackling a question that keeps finance executives up at night: how do you move money across borders when the rules keep changing? The project, called Fragmentation Finance, looks at how geopolitical shocks are quietly rewriting the wiring of Asian capital markets.

The research moves beyond the usual talk of supply chains and tariffs. It digs into the operational side of finance, where decisions about treasury management, credit lines, and settlement currencies are now being made with one eye on the news cycle. Middle East tensions, export controls, and the widening US-China technology split are no longer just risks to model. They are events that shift liquidity overnight and force banks to rethink who they do business with.

StoneBench, which works with some of the region's largest financial institutions, built the hub to track these shifts in real time. The core argument is simple: fragmentation is not a future scenario. It is the current operating environment. Asian banks and asset managers are having to navigate a patchwork of sanctions, capital controls, and local rules that often contradict each other.

The research also highlights how this new reality creates winners and losers. Some hubs, like Hong Kong and Singapore, are seeing new business as capital flows reroute around traditional corridors. Others face the risk of being cut off from dollar clearing or key technology inputs. For finance leaders, the takeaway is that geopolitical risk has moved from the boardroom presentation to the daily trading desk. The question is no longer whether fragmentation will happen, but how to price it in.
