ITHACA, N.Y. - Tompkins County Director of Finance Darrel Tuttle has announced his resignation, stepping away from the role just as local officials are deep into preparing the next fiscal year's budget. Tuttle, who has been with the county for several years, will leave his post in the coming weeks.
County Administrator Lisa Holmes confirmed the departure, noting that Tuttle's last day will be in early December. The timing is notable, as the county legislature is currently reviewing spending proposals and revenue projections for the upcoming year. Tuttle's responsibilities included overseeing the county's financial operations, managing the annual budget process, and advising elected officials on fiscal policy.
Holmes praised Tuttle's service, calling him a steady hand during a period that included the financial uncertainties of the pandemic and subsequent recovery. She said the county will immediately begin a search for an interim replacement to ensure budget work continues without disruption.
Tuttle did not specify his next steps in the resignation letter, which was shared with county staff. He expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve and confidence in the finance team's ability to carry on. The county legislature is expected to formally accept the resignation at its next meeting.
