Tronox reported second-quarter revenue of $868 million, a 19 percent increase compared to the same period last year. The gains came from stronger titanium dioxide and zircon volumes, which helped offset lower average zircon selling prices and a less favorable product mix. The company still posted an operating loss of $21 million and a net loss attributable to shareholders, though the revenue jump signals improving demand in key end markets.
Executives on the earnings call pointed to continued recovery in the construction and coatings sectors, which have been driving TiO2 demand. Zircon volumes also rose, but pricing remained under pressure due to oversupply in certain regions. Management noted that cost reduction initiatives and operational efficiencies are beginning to show results, even as raw material and energy costs stay elevated.
Looking ahead, Tronox expects third-quarter volumes to remain steady, with some seasonal softening typical of the period. The company is monitoring global economic conditions closely, particularly in Europe and China, where industrial activity has been uneven. Capital spending plans remain focused on maintaining plant reliability and advancing sustainability projects.
The earnings report comes at a time when the broader chemicals sector is navigating mixed signals, with some segments seeing recovery while others lag. Tronox management expressed cautious optimism, saying they are positioned to benefit if demand continues to strengthen in the second half of the year.
