‘You Haven’t Got a Business Yet, You’ve Got a Theory’: Dave Ramsey to 25-Year-Old Working 3 Jobs

A 25-year-old working three jobs recently asked personal finance expert Dave Ramsey if he should pour his entire savings into a fitness coaching brand. His problem: he had not yet landed a single client. Ramsey's response cut through the excitement with a hard truth that applies to countless side hustles.

"You haven't got a business yet, you've got a theory," Ramsey said during a call on his show. He warned that spending thousands on logos, websites, and equipment before proving anyone will pay you is a fast route to broke. The young man wanted to invest in certification courses and marketing materials, but Ramsey pushed back hard. He told him to go find one paying customer first. Just one. If nobody buys what you are offering at a price that covers your time, then no amount of branding will fix that.

Ramsey's point is simple but often ignored. A real business has revenue. A theory has a dream and a credit card. He advised the caller to keep working his three jobs, use evenings to knock on doors or message potential clients, and only scale up once he had actual cash coming in. That approach feels slower, but it avoids the graveyard of failed startups built on hope and borrowed money.

The underlying mistake, Ramsey explained, is falling in love with the idea of being a business owner instead of doing the unglamorous work of selling. He suggested the 25-year-old offer free sessions to five people in exchange for honest feedback, then ask those five to pay for the next round. That test costs almost nothing and tells you more than any fancy website ever will.

For anyone sitting on a side hustle idea, the takeaway is uncomfortable but clear. Validate before you invest. If you cannot get one stranger to hand over money for what you offer, you are not behind on marketing. You are ahead on learning. And that lesson is a lot cheaper when it does not wipe out your savings.
