BHP Group has cleared a major regulatory hurdle for its massive copper mine expansion in Chile. The company announced on July 7 that it received an initial environmental permit for the Escondida project, giving it the green light to begin early-stage work valued at $1.3 billion.
The permit covers a series of preliminary construction activities and site preparations. Escondida is already one of the largest copper mines in the world, and this expansion aims to extend its operational life while boosting production capacity. The approval comes after months of review by Chilean environmental authorities, who assessed the project's potential impact on local water resources and surrounding ecosystems.
BHP has emphasized that the expansion will incorporate new technologies to reduce water consumption and lower emissions. The company is under pressure to meet growing global demand for copper, a critical metal used in electric vehicles, renewable energy systems, and data infrastructure. With copper prices remaining volatile, securing this permit allows BHP to lock in long-term production plans.
The initial approval does not cover the full scope of the expansion. BHP will still need to obtain additional permits for later phases of construction. However, this first step is seen as a strong signal that the project is on track. The company expects the expansion to create thousands of jobs during the construction phase and provide a steady supply of copper for decades to come.
