Sending a child off to college is a major milestone. It brings new opportunities and plenty of natural questions, especially about money. For many young adults, this is the first real taste of financial independence. Without a solid foundation, that freedom can quickly lead to stress. Here are the core lessons every college-bound student should learn before they step on campus.
First, understand the difference between needs and wants. A textbook for a required class is a need. A daily latte is a want. This sounds simple, but in the dorms, the line blurs fast. Teach them to pause before every purchase. A good rule is to wait 24 hours before buying anything over a certain amount.
Second, budget for the full semester, not just the month. Tuition and housing are big costs, but the small ones add up. Laundry, snacks, printing fees, and a ride to the store can drain a bank account. Help them track their spending for a week before they leave. Then, set a realistic weekly allowance for those variable costs.
Third, credit cards are tools, not free money. This is the most dangerous trap. A student should only get a card if they can pay the full balance each month. Late payments and high interest can wreck a credit score before they even graduate. Start with a secured card or a low-limit card tied to your account.
Fourth, learn to cook a few basic meals. Eating out every day is expensive and unhealthy. A microwave, a rice cooker, and a few simple recipes can save hundreds of dollars a month. It also builds a skill they will use for life.
Finally, talk openly about student loans. They need to know exactly how much they are borrowing and what the monthly payment will look like after graduation. A $30,000 loan might not feel real now, but a $300 monthly payment for ten years is very real. Encourage them to treat loans as a serious commitment, not just free cash.
These lessons are not complicated, but they are essential. A little preparation now can prevent a lot of financial headaches later.
